2001 Report on

the State of Guangdong Provincial Environment

Ecological Conservation

(1).Natural Conservation Region

Established provincial Natural Conservation Region Judging and Examination Committee, and set up ral conservation region, 11 of them have been approved. By the end of November 2001, Guangdong has set up 176 natural conservation regions, total area of 2.7473 million hectare, including land area 637.3thousand hectare, which is 3.58% of provincial land area.

(2).Ecological Demonstrative Region

Deepen in the construction of ecological demonstrative region, ecological demonstrative village (town, farm, garden). Shixing, Liannan, Nanao, Jiexi, Xuwen have become d national ecological demonstrative region experimental units, which mean that there are 11 cities and counties have become experimental units. 56 units in Guangdong applied for "Guangdong Provincial Ecological Demonstrative village (town, farm, garden)", is twice of year 2000,36 of them have passed the examination. Till now, Guangdong has setup 67 ecological demonstrative villages (towns, farms, gardens).

(3).Control of Area Source Pollution

Prophase work of provincial ecological investigation, planning of ecological function region, planning of ecological conservation has been started. Assisting CEPA in holding "International workshop of in break of exotic species and protection of biodiversity" and the "Workshop of medium-large scale breeding wastewater treatment and integrated usage of firedamp and commercial development". Organized and fulfilled the investigation report on scaled breeding farm pollution source. Supervised the environmental protection management of near-coastal sea region, carried out the checking and summarized of coastal cities and counties management in near-coastal sea region. Also optimized the station distribution for monitoring near-coastal sea region environment. Organized and fulfilled the investigation of the direct pollution influx to sea.

Environmental Man Agement

Working Out the "Ten-Fifth" Plan

Ten-Fifth" Plan of Guangdong environmental protection is an important part of provincial economy and development plan, is one of the ten key specific plans in Guangdong Ten-Fifth" Plan. 14th June 2001, Guangdong provincial government has issued <Notice on issuing Guangdong Provincial Environmental protection "Ten-Fifth" Planning>, asking regional grade cities, Shunde, relevant units of Guangdong government to carry out.

According to the environmental protection situation and requests of Guangdong"Ten-fifth", Guangdong EPB has formulated <Guangdong "Ten-fifth" Construction Planning of Environmental Management Technology Ability> in time, and has been approved by the provincial government. It has been issued to each cities and counties, provided a guide and guarantee for improving the provincial environmental management technology ability.
